Residents near the sulfur dioxide leak at Gansu smelter experience discomfort symptoms
2025-06-04

Yesterday (May 27) at 9:10 am, a sulfur dioxide escape accident occurred at a zinc smelter in Cheng County, Longnan City, Gansu Province, which emitted a pungent smell, causing some people to experience discomfort symptoms. Many villagers said that they smelled the pungent smell and caused nausea and vomiting, and students returned home from school or seek medical treatment. After the accident, the local government immediately carried out emergency response work. At present, the escaping gas has been completely controlled and no casualties have been reported.

After preliminary investigation, the cause of the accident was that the sulfur dioxide fan of the Chengzhou Zinc Smelter of Changba Company suddenly tripped, causing sulfur dioxide to escape. The company that occurred in the accident was a zinc smelting and processing enterprise under Baiyin Nonferrous Metals Group. The company has been suspended for rectification.

The families of several students from Chengxian No. 3 Middle School near the factory involved told The Paper that their children had symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, difficulty breathing, and purple lips. Some children needed oxygen and were sent to Chengxian People's Hospital for treatment. Mr. Wang, who lives about 500 meters away from the smelter, said that his family smelled a pungent smell in the air in the morning, and felt chest tightness and poor breathing. After raining at about 10 o'clock in the morning, Mr. Wang saw yellow powder appearing on the ground at home, and the odor in the air weakened.

Cheng County organized medical institutions to treat 10 people with obvious symptoms. After timely treatment, the symptoms were significantly alleviated and the vital signs were normal. The rest of the people who stayed in the hospital for observation have begun to go home one after another. The monitoring was carried out through four monitoring points set up on site at the Longnan Ecological Environment Monitoring Center of Gansu Province and Chengxian Environmental Monitoring Station . The monitoring results were: "Point 1# 7 ug/m, Point 2# 7 ug/m, Point 3# 18 ug/m, Point 4# 7 ug/m". The hourly concentration of sulfur dioxide in the air at the four monitoring points meets the second-level standard limit of the "Ambient Air Quality Standard" (GB3095-2012), and does not affect the normal production and life of the people.

Sulfur dioxide mainly comes from industry, especially residents living near industries that suffer greatly. So, what are the dangers?

1. Stimulation effect

When sulfur dioxide passes through the nasal cavity, trachea, and bronchus, it is absorbed and retained by the water in the inner cavity, turning into sulfurous acid, sulfuric acid and sulfate, enhancing the stimulation effect.

2. Toxic effects

After sulfur dioxide enters the human body together with suspended substances in the air, aerosol particles can bring sulfur dioxide to the deep part of the lungs, and its toxicity increases by 3 to 4 times.

3. Induce cancer effect

Under the combined action of sulfur dioxide and benzo(a)pyrene, the incidence of lung cancer in animals is higher than that of a single oncogenic factor. For example, Guangfeng Village, Guangyi Town, Chong'an District, Wuxi City is surrounded by chemical factories, and cancer accounts for more than 60% of the total number of cancer patients in the town, which is really scary.

In addition, after sulfur dioxide enters the human body, the vitamins in the blood will bind to it, causing the balance of vitamin C in the body to be imbalanced, thereby affecting metabolism. It can also inhibit and destroy or activate the activity of certain enzymes, causing the metabolism of sugars and proteins to be disordered, thereby affecting the normal growth and development of the body.

Sulfur dioxide is so harmful to the environment and the human body. It is necessary to prevent it during use and storage to prevent leakage and cause losses to personnel and property. Wherever there is storage and use of sulfur dioxide , sulfur dioxide leakage alarms must be installed. Staff need to wear portable gas detectors to detect leakage accidents in a timely manner!
